Oct. 14- Tho I had longed for the moment when I could get away, when it actually came I felt a regret in leaving it so soon. By the time we had driven the 70 odd miles through the flat country, I was not loath to leave. By the time we got to Houston, the skies had cleared.
While waiting for the train there, caught a glympse of a curious parade and heard the calliope (which should be pronounced cally-ope) - wild barbaric music!
Most of the train ride was much the same as coming down, thought I saw more of the “red earth” section. Some of the roadways & banks were almost frightening in their vividness. About dusk we passed through an oil well section that seemed miles long. A dreary, tho spectacular forest of derricks & crude houses - the ground seemed blackened with oil, in places great garish flares were burning brightly.
Dining alone in a train car is about the acme of loneliness.
Oct. 15- St. Louis by 8:30. Bought three mystery tales here as a fortification of the long ride to Huntington - a long tiresome day.
Huntington by 9:30. Call Mr. Francis - who gives me directions for going to Logan in the morning & directs me to a hotel. Call Bertha when settled in room.
