First stop on Stolle Rd. south of Bullis Rd. A valley in moonlight - it seemed many years since I had been out at night like this, far from city lights and noises. Wandered around Marilla and north of Clinton on several roads. - Last stop was on the bridge over the Buffalo Creek on Winspear Rd. It was past midnight - the stream below swollen by the recent rains, roared with an eerie sound - the rapids ghostly against the darker water. The calm half light from the incomplete moon, had a strangely sinister quality about it, altho beautiful and mysterious. It was not hard to understand how a person affected with melancholia might go mad under moonlight.
June 21, 1937 (Monday)
A dark somber day with sodden skies, and heavy almost continuous downpour. In studio all day working on moonlight picture.
By noon the back field about the shed & tower, was all underwater, as were the two lots adjoining. At late afternoon, the skies cleared and the sun came out full and strong - a warmth that was almost sickening in its intensity - how marvelously fresh & new the world seemed - a thousand scents seemed released; the soul expanded.
Evening - 8th grade graduation. Mary Alice & Martha in their white dresses, looking so starry eyed and innocent brought tears to our eyes.
