I came when the lake I discovered last fall & which I circled only today from the east. I walked over to it. A high wind was blowing and little waves roughened the surface of the lake, which caught the intermittent sunshine in spasmodic flashes of silver; I pick a bouquet of hepaticas for Bertha.

A cool, brilliantly sunlit day. The hepaticas in my garden all open wide to the sun.
May 12, 1937- (Wednesday)
A sultry day - (86° in the midafternoon) - the hot wind bears a thousand scents, and I swear I could detect blackberry bloom.
At late afternoon a heavy rainstorm with a strong wind - In the evening I walk out thru the yard - a lush, loose, soft feeling. There are countless great angleworms which jerk back on all sides at my tread.
After telling myself that this year was not the year for the Elevators picture, one afternoon a week or so ago after doing a bit of shopping, I thought I would go down to the spot to convince myself. The exact opposite happened however - my whole being rushed out to embrace the harbor - a soft breeze blowing up the slip. How can I, (I thought) deep from working on the picture. So now I am getting deep into it, and it is like a balm to my troubled spirit. I was so bored with my little water-colors, and didn’t
