Dream – On a riverboat that ferries between two points on river. A sort of maiden trip. Seemed as if another man and I were sort of honor guests. Captain has a new outfit for taking talking pictures – he wants my companion and I to pose. My companion is to fry griddle-cakes, which he does. I am to eat pork and beans. When I start I make as much noise as possible with knife and fork so it will register. When I ask captain – “how can I make sound doing this.” He: Suppose you say “I swear to eat nothing but pork and beans the rest of my natural life” and I did, feeling very embarrassed.
A gray morning – snow starts midmorning and all day we have blizzards – light fluffy beautiful snow. Fuss around all morning looking over pictures. Make changes on water-color “Mandrake and Pines” and bring it in to hang in front room. Before dinner make paths – a fine occupation.
This is marvelous winter weather – around 16 degrees all day. Walk in the fields at morning.
Afternoon get to work at my winter picture – some good work on it.
Children home from school all this week on acct. of colds. Sally and Mary Alice play “store” and make all their commodities with crayon drawings and cut them out – very ingenious.
Thurs. Mar. 10
We all got up late – after breakfast I put wires on several pictures and hung them, then up to P.O. and for short walk. Sky partly cloudy – high S.W. wind, and snow drifting in great misty shapes. Drifts at west and of town are head-high.
The day one of “fiddling” around – get out all small frames and fit pictures into them.
Tame rabbit for dinner which we bought of Brooker. A great success – it was unanimously decided next time we must get twice as much at least.
At twilight up to P.O. The air clear - the wind damp the west a solid gray – reading in paper of drifts out in the country 15 and 20 feet deep –
