if by pre-arrangement – from the railroad comes the mournful whine of freight car wheels grinding on a curve in the tracks, to break the deathly silence.
The combined smell of bitter wood smoke and almost sickening sweet steam of boiling sap – I look at my hands clutching the first hepaticas and they are red and raw with the cold.
A day when Spring is more advanced, along the Gates Mill carline or Bedford Glens country – a spring rain has cleared up; a brilliant filmy green covers the fields + woods – the crescendo of an interurban streetcar starting up –
An early April or late March day – midmorning – a rain gloom is spreading over the sky – robins “calling for rain” mingle their cries with the sound of a carpenter’s hammer – Dried bean pods – light from a S.S. sun on dried plants, and the clapboards of a house
