There are certain primitive sight sounds and smells that have a perennial interest for me. It is a dark rainy day outside & it is pleasant to think of them. It is a warm rainy day in spring – noon has come and for a few minutes the sun half comes out and is reflected for a few seconds on the wet shiny surface of an old tin can in some alley refuse heap; It is the morning of July 5; the inevitable July 4th thunderstorm has come in the night and gone; the sun has come up full and strong – the whole earth is steaming as I imagine it did in the days before the “the earth had cooled off” on the surface; the air is heavy with a hot humidity and mingled with the smell of “cooking” vegetation is the strong smell of burnt powder from the previous day’s celebration.
