The grim mechanical character of the war was brought to me as never before – the men walking thru the woods with bayonets fixed, not seeing the enemy, dropping silently all the time –
The terrible machine guns – perhaps the inhuman of them all, worse than bombs-
These men walking thru the wood with that peculiar stare on their faces –
I wonder how anyone could win a victory –
The great “offensive” at night with the bombs exploding constantly – a lurid spectacular thing – in which the men were like ants – not a chance for them –
I felt it would be great to go thru it + come out alive – but not if one had to die.
