(F.J.L. had been toPikeville,Kentuckyyears ago, remembered it as a fascinating backwoods country village, and, thinking I might like it, asked me to go with him on a re-visit.)

Long ride to Bridgeport– toWheelingby trolley – no train until8:50– After dinner wandering around streets awhile, then to movie – a terrible western - run to slow for one thing – containing an unrealistic phony brawl –
After supper to another movie, then to train and to bed.
Up at 4:00 a.m.– at4:30by day coach to Kenovo – thence by auto to Cattletsburg. Early light; depressing cloudiness.
Met man in auto who told usPikesvilleterritory in the throes of an oil boom and that we would find everything topsy-turvy.
Breakfast in what had formerly been a bar room – soggy pancakes.
Check on grips at the r.r. station, and went for a short walk.-
