valleys. The mystery of traveling little, used unknown roads at night – asking our way from Dutchmen who could scarcely talk English – By rare good luck find Bolton Brown, friend of Lankes.
Night at Brown’s – Schwanie and I in studio- next morning Brown shows us complete lithographic process, we making a sketch and printing – Swim in creek, then we go to Woodstock. I look up Bellows* - make sketch of Catskills then on and on –
The backward views of the Catskills as we went up the Hudson River were fine – the trip across the Hudson on the ferry one of the great moments of the trip – a wonderful sky after the rain – with great flat spreading clouds – the towns Athens and Hudson having a mellow look as well as the river and the men on the ferry - re Negro “dandy”
Great Barrington by night – a noisy waterfall was just back of our room which lulled us to sleep.
Friday – a few hours in “Open Book Shop” at Pittsford run by Robert Frost’s daughters. We were glad to get away from restrictedMassachusetts.
* Bellows greeted us cordially and did not seem to mind the interruption.
