Mar 10, 1923 –; To walk along Niagara & canal – ; along the canal back of tenement houses – on the bridge over the canal – the dirty sooty shiny water has a sullen look – it breeds foul orders & mists – the dirty soot stained flat walls of the tenements fronting it – I felt here is the place for an artist – to dream a dream enveloped in misery – to tell the truth about this is a poetic task – ; Coming up in Main Street – the crude blocky buildings – People hurrying home from work – blank staring focus – the frightened hurried look of those running for cars –
