Apr. 10, 1922 – ; A thunderstorm tonight – it reminds me of God and the dignity of life. If it is the aim of man to become like God, he must add dignity & grandeur to his life.; On a bicycle ride tonight I went down a dark asphalt street that was dusty & uneven & for a minute I was reminded of a small town near Salem, whose main street was packed cinders, & of dark summer evenings going along this road – and a terrible wave of homesickness swept over me.Apr. 17 1922 – ; An old Indian woman sitting in a street corner with hypaticas (sic) in a basket reminded me of lumber mill hillsides on a hazy March day when the first hydraticas (sic) are out and the first moths are still fluttering around pockets sugar camps – I could see this old woman of a Sunday wandering around on a hillside after flowers –
