Morning – chat with mother – to Aunt Em’s – a warm sultry day – dead calmness – afternoon talk with Louise – out in the yard where Jim is working – smoke from a bon–fire – Louise & I to town – buying suit & hat – visit to Mary’s – James & the baby – James & sand-pile –; The calm beauty of a spring evening; Evening Kenreichs come in – We go downtown – in “Frances’ Store – out to Mary’s – to turn again – in ice-cream parlor – (my delight in walking in public with Bertha) – ; Evening of cards & laughter –; Saturday night – Bertha & I spend it together. We did not go to bed till almost six – it was getting light & the birds had commenced to sing – later on Bertha came in & awakened me –; Morning Mrs. K. gives us her blessing –; Bertha & I for walk – the sugar camp – boys collecting sap – we paused on a bank covered with hypaticas (sic) & listened to the red wings & toads in a marsh – now & then we heard crows, songsparrows (sic) & flickers – the pale sun & the nervous rustling of the dead leaves – ; The wonderful chicken dinner – the gay banter – reading of Bertha’s brother’s letter – trip to Youngstown when we realized that we hadn’t said anything we had intended to –
