March 23 1922 – ; A wonderful spring day. The sun springs up in the morning with a blinding glare – The west sky is a deep blue – trees stand stark & bold, vivid orange & yellow with deep (n.d) branches; houses glow with color; their eaves are aglitter with gay circles; it is a morning for brave thoughts & physical exultation. ; ; Mar. 27 –; Apr 24 – Evening – on train to Youngstown – the dappled evening – the long line of snow patterned hills to the south (the great gray hills of march –) –“the” interminable” ride after darkness settled down – Bertha & Mart meet me at Youngstown – I had been anticipating our meeting but I was not prepared to see Bertha as wonderful as she was – it was like a revelation to me – our ride to Salem – it was only in when we were each other’s arms that I finally realized the agony of our separation – ; Arrival home – the joy of seeing mother & Jim & the girls again – the familiar rooms – our meal of lima beans–; Saturday morning – I awoke to see a mist over the apple trees outside – robins & song sparrows singing, tho I had slept but five hours I could not help but spring up with gladness –
