Night in the hotel – the beds hot roaring of trains all night; Feeling somewhat jaded the next morning but after a good breakfast of ham and eggs (at Enos Moon’s) we felt better – ; Before proceeding on our journey we bought cards to mail to our families and friends. I sent one to B.K. (was it only wishful thinking or did she look a little downcast when I told her I was going on this trip?); The long hot walk along the rail-road (we were heading for Steubenville); A large cactus growing in a yard amazed us; at Stratton we refreshed ourselves on birch-beer, which of course only made us thirstier – We bought lunch here, and took it onto a boat to eat it –; We felt duty-bound to do some sketching – so we separated – Keller and I found a nice grassy spot on the river’s edge – I removed my shoes and socks and dabbled my feet in the water, while K.
