May 21 – 1921 – Yesterday a trip with Jim and Jim Groner after frogs.
The wonder of a May afternoon such as I never experienced before filled me with inexpressible happiness – It was one of those (seemingly) endless peaceful afternoons when all Nature stands still in the exultant flush of perfect growing life; I sat on a hillside most of the afternoon while the two Jims hunted for frogs –

At night I experienced again the mystery of late spring dusk in the swamps.
May 23, 1921 – The evening is oppressively warm; this year’s Spring has developed too rapidly; a pall is over the sky; to the south a thunderstorm hangs motionless, spreading over the heavens in a huge gray expanse‒ Four fellows
