But it didn’t satisfy, for a bull has no picturesqueness about him, about as much charm as a fat butcher in love; and it remained to Strindberg to supply the symbol – a black stallion pursuing a white mare. The old symbols did not suffice – the world has long gone stale on the Botticelli type of unearthly sentimentalism.
