her real delight. One of the boys was called in the crowd was called “Sunshine” for the same reason fat boys receive the nickname of “Slim”; another was called “Cigarette”. The boys had great amusement teasing an Italian boy by yelling at him “Dum, Dum, the Showboat Gun” what the significance of it was I couldn’t figure out, but it roused the boy to the highest pitch of irritation. As he was more than a match for any of them, they always got at a safe distance. “Sunshine” made a miscalculation when he yelled it, for unexpectedly another boy held him until “Showboat” could come up; a farcical fight was staged which consisted of “Sunshine” groveling on the ground answering Showboat’s blows & kicks with exaggerated howls of anguish.
After a good dinner at Enus Moon’s I got my wheel and started out for Irondale. This trip was a source of wonder & delight to me, the increasingly high hills being the cause; it was midafternoon; there was a tremendous calm in the air; the tall white sun seemed motionless; Hammondsville was like a look into the colonial days of Ohio, with its old primitive buildings & sleeping inhabitants –
