[inscription reads] " Sept. 11, 1914/ A dark cloudy morning sky lightened somewhat by rifts. An early pattering shower speckled the dust. / Distances extremely hazy. / White steam & smoke from factories has wintry look. / Noon-the day remains unchanged. I think what makes the distances so hazy is that the smoke, imprisoned close to the earth, fills the air. Train smoke becomes a pure white, a weird (sic) effect.
