hair of a curly dog. On lifting it up I saw it clung together like a huge mat. In its meshes were numberless snails. I found a small piece of glutenous transparent matter, which I took to be snail¬spawn. In it were tiny white eggs.(HT)I found this “scummy growth” in great quantities along here, which had the same effect on the water as moss & lichens do on trees, giving it an air of antiquity.
