[inscription reads] " and proceeding thru (sic) wood I come to Sulphur Marsh. The sulphur from Reese’s Mine has worked destruction. Most of the trees are dead or dying. The smell is unpleasant; ground soft & yellow, thick matted with dead branches. Swamp sumac is the last survivor. Its leaves are bright scarlet. I make my way over boards. Nearing the edge of the swamp I find it is softly carpeted with a thick mat of dead grass & plants. / Swamp ferns abundant & other rank growth. Elders & conewillows. Come out upon a shorn hayfield. "
