[inscription reads] " Continue north toward swamp. Big patch of “fir tree” moss. Sinks in to our feet. I find this moss is common here. / Wooded mound east of this swamp is as secluded as one may wish. Will call in Witchhazel Mound. / Witchhazels, Cottonwoods, dogwoods, & haws predominate. The shade is dense. Ironwood, elm ash maple. / Go east ward to Cat-tail Marsh. A flock of black birds here. At my approach they fly up, giving a scattered cry. This swamp proves too deep.
