[inscription reads] " as tho (sic) it were a great effort. / Enter Hawthorne Meadow. Herbage here is at south end. Chiefly yarrow giving place further north to goldenrod, haws are loaded with apples. / To the east, bordering Round hill is a patch of filmy vervain behind which is a patch of goldenrod, whose immature heads are yellow-green, still further, are the lance-y cat-tails. / Redbirds whistles from Post’s. / See hummingbird hawk-moth at rest on a black-birch sapling.
