[inscription reads] " better success. Try still another side where there seems to be less roots. This time successful. The tree falls, but with hole down. In tearing a log out of way so I could roll it over, I shatter a nest of small brown ants. The eggs & larva scatter. The intoxicating odor of decaying wood greet me. The “hole” proved to be but an inch deep. Evidently the bird who began it had been frightened or for some other reason had concluded to stop. Thus I got nothing for my efforts & had given the ants "
