[inscription reads] " fested with plant-lice, the “cows” as naturalists tell us, of ants. Apparently every louse has its ant. Seeking to find where the ants “dairy” was I started out to trail them. It was a wonder to me how they kept the way unless they have worn a path to (sic) delicate for our cumbersome eyes. It is more probable that as some were constantly going & some returning, that they thus kept their way. Path led to a log on the other side of a fence. I overturned the log but found no nest I could not discover where their way led. / All at once the air became "
