[inscription reads] " I strive to answer Peterbird & hear him gradually coming closer. Presently hear his rasping alarm cry close at hand. A chewink gives “chewink” call. A goldfinch shoots by. A solitary birdsong with a sort of melancholy in it – Tee-ree — peer-peer-peer-peer-peer-peer-peer. Growing more rapid - & fainter with each syllable. Soon goldfinches are heard. Cicadas dominate all these sounds when it sings. / Was much interested in watching some ichneumon flies lay their eggs in the rotten trunk of a shagbark hickory.
