[inscription reads] " opening one, I find they are all connected by a winding passage just under the sod. By chance I discover hole that leads downward. The tunnels are about 1” in diameter. Probably mouse or mole. Tearing rotten stump apart. The inside turned to dirt. / “Tseerie-bird” calls for a while. On expressive voice of this day. It has a yearning sound. It agrees well with my spirit for I find something rises within me which will not come out. / Peterbird sings distantly unceasingly. Patches of russet fallen may-flowers. "
