[inscription reads] " seems to betray an intelligence, which I think however is false. / Jim left some turtle bait on the tree stump, which soon attracted countless infinitesimal red ants; they must be possessed of a sense of smell. / All during the evening crickets came from the depths of the stump & chirped. The light seemed to paralyze or charm them. / While the foliage of the trees looks green and we do not think of it as inflammable, yet the leaves on the beech here burned readily when the lamp was put up to them. "
