[inscription reads] " the water & slimy shores with their fruit. On the west bank hang two great Buttonwoods opposite which is a thick squatty hawthorne. / The gobby (sic) shore is inhabited by millions of small flies some of which are constantly flying, filling the air with a thin hum. A move towards their direction sets them all up, and the thin sound becomes a resounding hum like a myriad bees. The ride the water, & mud alike. Mud is woven with curious wriggly paths. / Pond continues westward a short distance. / Wild rose in bloom here. "
