[inscription reads] " main trunk was practically hollow, being partially filled with hunk. The limbs were solid, as several, shattered by the force of the fall, showed / Sit down on edge of east pond. It is the solemn hour. Bob-white calls. Calves in distance. Sheep. Barking of dogs. Crows to east. Songs-sparrow. Horse neighs. Sun a dim spot sinking in whispy (sic) mists behind feathery willows / Looking directly at the sun, we see the air is full of minute insects which in other directions are invisible. The sunlight has a mellowness born of the maturing seasons. "
