[inscription reads] " waves frothing at the ragged edge of a hole in an ice-meadow; of wet snow falling to annihilation in a dark sea, of polar bears bending backs against the wind & sleet – one expects at any moment to see Aurora Borealis itself to be blown across the horizon. / [Oft times while astrolling I conjure for my inward ear weird (sic) strains of music which as I look across blued fields & knolls, sounds as the sweetest music. I note the tune – repeat it o’er & o’er again to make sure of it. What a pretty tune, I say, how expressive of this particular phase "
