[inscription reads] " Thus is nature eternal. / I decide to stroll down the pond bed. Almost immediately come upon a pond similar to first one, which has dried up. Here are the dried bodies of fish. Hundreds of glossy small beetles run hither & thither. Doubtlessly scavengers. These animals fight death to the last degree – under some bark & a leaf I found a waterbug & two leaches retreating there to escape the rays of the sun. Tiny flies. / Here many be seen peelings from a large Buttonwood. / As if by some preconcerted (sic) action, about 15 sheit- "
