One of the greatest necessities, says Prof. Matzen to us, of a student in his work is to acquire a perspective of himself. The preceding paragraph shows that I have already - or think that I have - acquired such a thing. How plain my road lies ahead - but how easily may I be thrust from the road by some unforeseen circumstance. But today it extends straight ahead - and tomorrow it may be full of turns and muddy places and pitfalls.
This has been a great year - but I wonder if every year will not seem great to me? I hope so for when the first year comes that does not seem more wonderful than the last, then will I think that I am a failure. Each year has seemed too wonderful to be exceeded, but the next year, life grows so much more wonderful and delightful than the preceding year almost fades into significance.
