seem to have out-grown their coats. The shell-like coverings on their backs are much shorter than their abdomen, which gives them a ridiculous look. Many of them had mated and were busy making love. While I was watching them, a large beetle hove into view. I have been unable to find him in my meagre nature books, but from his appearance and actions, I would adjudge him a long-horn. And by reason of the beautiful yellow and black stripes which adorn him, I will call him the Zebra Longhorn until I can confirm it as his name. His legs are a pale lavender, contrasting finely to the yellow on his body. The soldier-beetles were not at all friendly to him, some of them making so bold as to leap on his back, tho ineffectually to be sure. The storm, when it came was my ideal kind.
