Sunday September 7, 1913
My waking this morning was caused by the rolling of thunder to the south. Pulling back the curtain revealed a grey sky -solid grey, and dead, in the morning twilight. I marked how different the thunder seemed than on other occasions. Sometimes it is sharp and loud, but this morning it was soft and rolling as a heavy wagon rumbles over a big wooden bridge.
The gist of the storm was not for us. After a short, quiet, and on the whole easy downpour, the rain ceased and there followed the usual quiet day with dreamy grey clouds and
