as if coated with ice. The yellow light, driven thru dashing rain, brought out the blackness of the torn clouds overheads in a striking manner.
We looked for a rainbow, but none appeared and presently the sun disappeared; the thunder hitherto silent, rollicked in the air far to the east; and as if it were a signal, the rain came down in torrents. The cool wind that came with it was fine.
As the storm gradually died away I was attracted to my window by the chippering calls of some chippy-sparrows. I saw the male perched on a clothes-line, apparently enjoying the rain. For daintiness and sweetness of appearance, there are none in the bird world which can quite compare to the smaller species of sparrows, among which the tree and the chippy species are the best examples. The sight of them inspires reverence.
