In the past few days I have received letters from Kaiser, Florence Parker (his girl) Dorothy Hanks + Flora Brown. I was sick last night and as a consequence did not go to work today so I settled myself in the Arbor and set about answering all the letters.
Today was a withering one. Not only does the blary sun which shines down from a dingey blue heat-racked sky, wither the scrawny plants and trees, but also our spirits. The metallic buzzing of the katy-dids adds to the heat and monotony of the day. Once in awhile the mind is cooled by the rollicking chippy song of a gold finch and once again I heard a yellow-bird sing. Towards midday the air beams filled with rolling thunder-heads which could only be discerned by their curving yellow edges, the body part being of the same color as the sky.
