mine; the track led far way over fields and hills to the Egypt Road where the mine was. Several men were laughing and talking here, about to go to the day’s work; they had built a little fire which was now burning merrily.
As it was getting late, I went on. At Barber’s farm, a flock of English Sparrows were chattering and making a great fuss; a collie came out and barked at me, somewhere chickens were crowing and cackling. Soon I was in on High St. again, and as I passed Kinkie’s house, he came out and shouted.
“Hey Burchie, where were you fellows?” Bill just went down the street ten minutes ago!”
“Did he?” I asked in reply, I’ve been out for a walk but when I went past at six o’clock, he wasn’t up.”
“What did you go for? Just for fun?”
“Just for the walk.”
When I got to Bill’s I gave our whistle. Presently Bill opened the door.
“Hello you ronyon,” he cried “why didn’t you come for me?”
“I did.” I replied “but you weren’t up. I whistled several times but I was afraid of waking your mother.”
