The sky clears at late afternoon, and the wind grows colder and stronger. To Silver Lake – pickerel – on way home stop at cheese factory. At Swanies a supper of roast ham & other things, particularly marsh marigold greens which I had never before – they had a peculiar bitter taste that was pleasing, and seemed to be the expression of the spring season. After supper Swanie shows me the things he is working on. And also a painting Austin had made of the ice subject – quite good -
May 6, 1934 –
Working around yard – dig up along west end of studio preparatory to transplanting iris. Trim willows.
May 9, 1934 –
Working last three days on “Hollows” picture, bringing it pretty well on the way to completion –
Evening letter from Miss McMillan, who has been ill for months in hospital.
May 10, 1934 – (Thursday)
A.M. to Lehdis for two apple trees to replace those that had died last winter. Rain threatened all morning, and there was a wind – it was pleasant planting the trees with this background –
P.M. Dr. Fleming brings out a young artist (Robert Blair) whom he had spoken of before. He brings his water-colors in and shows them rather bashfully. I was
