Charles Clough was one of the co-founders of Hallwalls in 1974. He has worked in photography, collage and painting, and more recently digital book production. About this work, Clough stated: “I made 4 paintings in this size and on black grounds in 1990 and I like them all very much and hope you can get the painting. The title ‘Grozny’ was chosen from the dictionary before the Soviet-Chechen conflict which wrecked the city of Grozny...” It was illustrated in an Art in America article by Elizabeth Licata in 1992.
