The work of Josh Iguchi centers around the compositions of Renaissance paintings, often with religious subjects, yet Iguchi does not recreate historical images, per se. His works are instead thoroughly modern, translating traditional religious subject matter into a contemporary visual language. Borrowing from Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, Iguchi uses twentieth-century fashion, neon lighting, photographic technology, and even beer bottles to create a parallel scene commenting on contemporary interpersonal relationships using classical form to focus attention on the timelessness of human pathos. —Joan Vita Marotta, 2002
