Otto John Gaul is documented in The Photo-Pictorialists of Buffalo by Anthony Bannon in 1981.The subject of this portrait, Ruth Erb Hoffman (1902-1968), was a Western New York artist who studied at the Art Institute of Buffalo, and is represented in the Burchfield Penney Art Center's collection with three oil paintings, including Road to Port-au-Prince, an interior scene, and a floral still life.
