collage triptych on Masonite
11 3/4 x 20 inches
Gift of Virginia Cuthbert Elliott, in memory of the artist, Philip C. Elliot, 1991
Philip C. Elliott used strategies employed by Surrealist artists, such as Max Ernst, in the early 20th century. Startling effects were created by overlaying details of contrasting scale, as in the bizarre exchange of human and animal eyes on juxtaposed faces. Texts also were deconstructed and reassembled in parts to skew meaning.
