This sculpture, Fox Hunter and Hounds, exemplifies the idea of motion with both the movement of the horse and dogs trotting across the landscape. Hunting dogs use their powerful sense of smell to track and uncover the desired prey. Dogs have been used for millennia to help humankind hunt for animals that can be used for food or as prized trophies. There are many different breeds of dogs such as Spaniels, Terriers, and Retrievers that specialize in certain types of hunting and prey retrieval. This bronze sculpture depicts four dogs sniffing the air and ground around them, leading to their master’s success in the hunt. This piece brings the activity of two different species together for the same goal in mind, and as a viewer you wonder: is the hunter just leaving the stable with his animals or are they already chasing the scent of a fox? --Leah Glenn, MST 622, 2019
