On April 3, 1952, Burchfield arrived “at the Big Woods” and went “for a stroll – the woods wonderful and deep with the mystery of North Woods”—his imaginary, transcendental destination. The weather shifted from rain to snow “& soon a small blizzard was raging. He sat in his car, ate his lunch, and “The sky cleared & I had hopes of being able to paint after all – took another short walk in the woods, and was all the more stirred by its somber foreboding – But before I could return again, another blizzard raging – So I gave it up and headed for home –” This drawing captures nature’s spiritual resonance in his favorite site.
