Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes asterius) a.k.a. “Parsley Swallowtail”
Wingspan 2 ¾ –3 ½” (70-90 mm).
Wings black; fore wings have a double row of yellow spots, the inner row larger and more triangular in male, much smaller in female; hind wings have a row of yellow submarginal crescent-like marks (lunules) and inner row of much larger yellow spots (male) or small spots (female); area between yellow spots suffused with blue in varying degrees.
Caterpillar is green with black head and a black band on each segment incorporating a series of golden spots.
Note how Burchfield folded the paper and made a mirrored impression for butterflies facing in the opposite position in the painting, Golden Dream.
