A.M. B & I comparing the Two Ravines pictures in the studio – It is clear to me now that the second larger version has missed fire [misfired] – In my straining for realism, it has become somewhat plodding, and lacks the abandoned creativeness of the 1917 version. However, its main elements are still good, and I already have plans for changing it, and bringing it together into one powerful whole. For the present it will have to rest, for I have worked myself out, on the subject of ravines.
The 1917 version is still a delight to me.
