A driving rain from the northeast all day – sketch of view east of here, with the poplar tree by my window in front; which delighted me.
It came to me yesterday what it was about [Sergeant] Pearson that I had not liked in camp [Camp Jackson]. It came out in our visit, when he related that he had been in Germany studying during 1915 & 1916 – and had seen the conditions there. He saw no evidence of any of the atrocities that were being spread about here, and saying so, when he returned to this country, he was immediately set down as pro-German. I had so judged him in camp, but of course now I realize that it was unjust – he knew more than we gullible fools at the time.
