Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Winter Solstice, 1920-21; watercolor on paper, 21 1/2 x 35 1/2 inches; Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH, Gift off Ferdinand Howald, 1931
Cold still day –
Pale misty yellow grey sky –
Houses various tones of steely grey – startle white windows of frost –
The snow creaks –
The sun a flat white disc rolls along the South; the southern horizon is yellow –
Sleigh bells represent the human side of winter; the accidental clinking creak of wagons over the snow the abstract side.
