Sept. 16 (Sat.)
A small watercolor of the large “September Rain & Wind” –
Just after I had finished B called from the back door – “Can you come in a minute?” (The tone of her voice betrayed me that someone had come to see me and she wanted to surprise me). As I came in the door “Come on in, I want to show you something very queer” – and then Art came around the corner! – It seems as if I was never so glad to see anyone. For a while we could hardly believe our good luck – He said he had had another... test a few days ago which was not good yet and the Dr. asked him what he wanted to do. Art said almost anything to get out of the hospital as he was “going nuts” – And the Dr. “How would you like to go home on a 30-day furlough?”
Art got a plane ride to Dayton Ohio and hitchhiked from there on. He has to keep to a fairly strict diet – no fats, ... etc. He looks pretty good and says he feels O.K.
Up late after midnight talking –
