Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Sunlit Afternoon After a Foggy Morning, June 28, 1916; watercolor with graphite on paper, Overall: 14 x 20 in. (35.6 x 50.8 cm) Frame: 27 3/4 x 21 3/4 in. (70.5 x 55.2 cm); Gift of Tony Sisti, 1979
A dark cold rainy morning – sky dark grey air full of a heavy neutral blue haze –
At noon a rare phenomenon – rich colors – trees blue-black, a maze of [Orange & Yellow Green] leaf spottings; mists part & sun comes forth for an instant – at once a pure white steam arises from the ground & ascends in ragged tatters in a rapid slanting, direction fields are cerulean, blue & white steam.
Bases of trees last completed in the steam; as the sun disappears so also the steam vanishes - -
The wonderful blue haze (now pure) remains – A hill with blue winter trees with rich blue haze – in front, a maze of trees with small leaf spotting with bright haze outline & in front of all a hazy green willow –
More clouds and rain in afternoon – The clouds break just at sunset & a brilliant orange sun comes forth – just before a yellow pallor fills the earth –
